Sundowns Triumph in Cairo, Setting the Stage for North African Championship Showdown
At the Cairo International Stadium, Mamelodi Sundowns advanced to the next round after a goalless draw, riding on the momentum from their first-leg triumph. This sets the stage for a North African championship clash.
From the kickoff, Al Ahly dominated, with Percy Tau making an immediate impact. He not only forced an early save but also secured a penalty. However, Ronwen Williams, Sundowns' goalkeeper, thwarted the penalty attempt. Al Ahly thought they had scored when Tau managed to beat the goalkeeper, but their celebrations were cut short by an offside call. To further thwart the Egyptians, Williams redeemed himself from a couple of mistakes, stopping a point-blank shot, helping Sundowns weather the initial onslaught.
On the other hand, Tau came close to scoring when he grazed the bar, indicating Sundowns' intent to counter. Nevertheless, Sundowns defended valiantly, ensuring their spot in their first continental final since 2016. Their defense, coupled with a bit of luck, was instrumental in holding off an Al Ahly team that had been eyeing the continental title after several near successes.
Sundowns displayed sheer determination throughout the match. Their journey in this tournament has been marked by stellar gameplay, especially evident in their first-leg win. During that encounter, they held Al Ahly in check and struck a decisive blow through Thapelo Maseko's counterattack goal. This goal from the previous game became the critical difference, allowing Sundowns to secure an aggregate win of note.
As the final hurdle, Sundowns now faces Wydad. If they triumph, they'll clinch the title of AFL's inaugural champions and a whopping $4 million prize.
