Sundowns Secure Slim Advantage Over Al Ahly Ahead of Cairo Showdown
Mamelodi Sundowns secured a crucial 1-0 victory at home against Al Ahly during the African Football League semi-final's initial leg in Pretoria this Sunday.
A fierce strike in the second half by Thapelo Maseko ensured the triumph for the South African team, who predominantly controlled the game against the formidable Egyptians at Loftus Versfeld Stadium.
In the game's early moments, Marcelo Allende was the main orchestrator in the midfield for the home side, though clear opportunities were few.
Maseko nearly scored for Sundowns, but his shot was excellently saved by Mohamed El Shenawy shortly after the first 30 minutes.
Nevertheless, the dynamic winger broke the deadlock in the 52nd minute with a powerful distant shot that El Shenawy couldn't stop.
Sundowns appeared in control until the end, with Percy Tau unsuccessfully arguing for a penalty following a tackle.
Yet, that lone goal gave Sundowns a slight edge as they anticipate the second leg in Cairo this coming Wednesday.
Manager Rhulani Mokwena will be content with his team's display, putting them in a favorable position to reach the inaugural AFL championship match.
However, Al Ahly still holds a strong position in the contest, gearing up to host Sundowns in their daunting Cairo stronghold.
The semi-final remains on a knife's edge.
