Morocco looks to avoid shock defeat against Tanzania in AFCON Round of 16 knockout clash
Morocco’s coach and players will naturally claim that Sunday’s Round of 16 clash against Tanzania will be taken seriously, however the hosts have got one of the easier matchups on paper.
But the real challenge for Morocco will begin in the quarterfinals. If the AFCON 2025 favorites overcome Tanzania live on beIN SPORTS on Sunday, then a match against either South Africa or Cameroon awaits.
Seeing as a very strong Morocco side was knocked out by South Africa in 2023 in the Round of 16, the hosts will still need to stay frosty against Tanzania. That’s certainly the warning from Moroccan defender, Ghanem Saiss, speaking ahead of Sunday’s match – “do not underestimate the opponent, do not repeat the mistakes of the past.”
Tanzania reached the knockouts by grabbing the last spot in the best third-placed teams group rankings. The two points racked up was the lowest total for a team advancing since best third-placed teams were introduced in 2019.
However, that statistic masks what was a solid performance for Tanzania in a tough group. The Taifa Stars lost narrowly 2-1 to Nigeria, held Tunisia to 1-1, and grabbed the other point against Uganda. Tanzania will look to Morocco’s opening game against lowly Comoros as a blueprint on Sunday, when the hosts were frustrated for much of the match.

The challenge will tough in front of a full stadium of home fans in Rabat, but the longer the Taifa Stars can stay in the game, the more their opponents’ nerves will be tested. Whatever happens, Tanzania’s coach, Miguel Gamondi, says his players will savor every second – “it is so beautiful to play against the host country, in front of a crowd of 80.000 people, be watched by millions, not only in Africa, in Europe, in America, everywhere.”
