Egypt held by Angola but seal Group B top spot at AFCON 2025
Egypt didn’t need goals to get the job done. Composure, control and just enough resilience were enough to finish top of the group against a desperate Angola side.
A point that meant everything for the Pharaohs
The goalless draw between Egypt and Angola in Agadir was all the Pharaohs needed. Not spectacular, but ruthlessly efficient, Egypt claimed the point required to finish top of Group B with seven points.
All the excitement of AFCON 2025 exclusively on beIN Sports.
Rather than chasing unnecessary risks, Egypt managed the match intelligently, fully aware that a draw was enough to book their place in the knockout stage of AFCON 2025.
Angola carried the greater threat
If there was a side pushing to break the deadlock, it was Angola. The Palancas Negras created the clearest chances, particularly in the first half, with efforts from Chico Banza, Antonio Maestro and M’Bala Nzola coming agonisingly close.
Egyptian goalkeeper Mohamed Oufa Shobeir stood firm when called upon, while the defence absorbed pressure from set pieces and sustained attacking spells.
Lack of cutting edge without Salah
The absence of Mohamed Salah was again evident in Egypt’s attack. Zizo tried to spark something going forward, but hesitation and heavy touches prevented chances from developing into genuine danger.
As the match wore on, Egypt increasingly focused on game management and counter-attacks, prioritising control over creativity.
A draw that leaves Angola on the brink
For Angola, the result was deeply frustrating. Pedro Gonçalves’ side finished the group with just two points, leaving them with only a faint chance of advancing as one of the best third-placed teams.
The intent was there, but a lack of clinical finishing ultimately proved costly in a tightly contested group.
Egypt move on with confidence
Without fireworks but with undeniable tournament know-how, Egypt achieved their first objective and progressed as group winners. The challenge now will be finding greater attacking sharpness as the knockout rounds loom.
The journey continues for the Pharaohs. For Angola, AFCON hopes hang by a thread.
