The game kicked off with fireworks as early as the 3’ of the first half, with an own goal by Edmond Tapsoba giving Mali a 1-0 lead in the opening moments. 

Later, in the second half at the 47’, 24-year-old Lassine Sinayoko extended Mali's lead, making it 2-0—a score that seemed unlikely for Burkina Faso to overcome.

However, Burkina Faso didn't back down, narrowing the gap to 2-1 in the 57’ with a penalty scored by Bertrand Traoré. 

Despite their efforts, Mali held on to the lead, securing a 2-1 victory and advancing to the AFCON quarterfinals. Now, they will face the host nation, which recently eliminated Senegal (the reigning champion), Ivory Coast.
