Luis Díaz Defends Bayern Move After Conquering the Bernabéu
Luis Díaz reaffirmed that his move to Bayern was the right decision after scoring in a big win at the Santiago Bernabéu.
Luis Díaz has no doubts: leaving Liverpool to join Bayern Munich was the right decision. The Colombian proved it with a decisive performance at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, where he played a starring role in a 2-1 victory over Real Madrid in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League.
The forward opened the scoring and led his team to a valuable first-leg advantage, reaching 41 goal contributions in what has been a truly outstanding season.
Statement performance on the big stage
The €75 million signing was instrumental in Bayern’s first European win over Madrid since 2012. Díaz’s goal set the tone for a match in which Vincent Kompany’s side imposed themselves, registering nine shots on target and controlling the tempo.
The Colombian is also in red-hot form, with five goal contributions in his last four European matches.
Validation after leaving Anfield
Now fully adapted to life at the Allianz Arena, Díaz has taken his level even higher this season, recording 23 goals and 18 assists.
Speaking to ESPN, he was clear: “Deciding to join Bayern was the right choice. I'm very happy and I enjoy every match. I feel great physically and ready to help the team. We have a clear plan, we are a very united group, and that shows on the pitch.”
A perfect plan at the Bernabéu
Bayern’s win in Madrid was built on a precise tactical setup that neutralized the opposition and allowed Díaz to exploit spaces. The Colombian revealed that his goal came from a move specifically prepared for the match.
“We had analyzed Real Madrid and the move came off exactly as planned. As the game went on, we felt more comfortable, won the ball back more often, and controlled the game better,” he explained.
Despite the win, Díaz admitted the team was left with a bittersweet feeling after failing to extend their advantage ahead of the return leg.
We’re very happy, but we feel we could have scored one or two more goals. We played a great match against a very tough opponent,” he concluded.
