Kimi Antonelli Conquers Madrid and Delivers Another Blow in the Formula 1 Championship

Madrid has its first winner.

Kimi Antonelli took advantage of a strategy-driven race and a Virtual Safety Car that completely changed the battle for victory to win the 2026 Spanish Grand Prix, the first Formula 1 race held at Madring.

The Mercedes driver crossed the finish line ahead of Max Verstappen and Lando Norris, securing his eighth victory of the season and taking another massive step toward the championship.

For Norris, however, it was a difficult afternoon to accept.

The reigning world champion had started from pole position and appeared to have everything under control for much of the race. But in Formula 1, a neutralization can change everything in a matter of seconds.

And that is exactly what happened in Madrid.

A Virtual Safety Car Changes Norris’ Race

Norris defended the lead at the start, while Antonelli and Verstappen battled behind him.

The McLaren driver managed to build a lead of more than six seconds and appeared to be on his way to a third victory of the season.

Then came the Virtual Safety Car.

An incident involving Lance Stroll triggered the neutralization and allowed several of Norris’ direct rivals to take advantage of the situation by pitting while losing significantly less time.

Antonelli was one of the biggest beneficiaries.

Norris, meanwhile, was caught out by the exact timing of the VSC. When he eventually made his stop, the advantage he had built disappeared, and he returned to the track behind Antonelli and Verstappen.

He was unable to recover.

The Italian managed his advantage all the way to the checkered flag and became the first winner in Madring history.

Antonelli Continues to Pull Away in the Championship

The victory confirms the extraordinary form of the Mercedes driver.

Antonelli has now won eight of the first 14 races of the season and extended his championship lead over teammate George Russell, his closest challenger, to 81 points.

One week after producing a spectacular comeback to win the Italian Grand Prix at Monza, the Italian once again stood on the top step of the podium.

This time, he did not need to fight his way through the field.

He simply needed to take advantage of the right moment.

Verstappen finished second for Red Bull, 4.351 seconds behind the winner, while Norris had to settle for third after leading much of the race.

Charles Leclerc finished fourth for Ferrari, followed by Russell in fifth.

The other side of the weekend for the Scuderia was Lewis Hamilton, who retired in the opening laps after reporting brake problems.

Franco Colapinto Secures an Impressive Seventh Place

One of the standout names of the weekend was Franco Colapinto.

The Argentine had started ninth for Alpine, but gained two positions during the opening laps and managed to remain in the battle for points for much of the race.

Colapinto took advantage of the Virtual Safety Car period to switch to hard tires and commit to a long strategy.

As the different pit-stop cycles unfolded, he even climbed as high as sixth.

He eventually crossed the finish line in seventh place, behind Liam Lawson and ahead of Oscar Piastri, completing a strong weekend after also reaching Q3 in qualifying.

The first Formula 1 visit to Madring therefore ended with another statement from the championship leader.

Norris had the speed.

He had pole position.

And for much of the afternoon, he also had control of the race.

But Antonelli had the opportunity.

And once again, he took it.
