Colapinto Set for F1 Comeback as Return Date Is Confirmed
Franco Colapinto is set to return to Formula 1 with Alpine at the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix in Imola, replacing Jack Doohan after a string of poor results from the Australian rookie.
Alpine Runs Out of Patience With Doohan
Following another disappointing weekend at the Miami Grand Prix, where Doohan retired on the opening lap after a collision with Liam Lawson, internal pressure within Alpine has grown. The Australian rookie has faced a series of incidents, including crashes in Australia and Japan, and penalties in China, fueling speculation about his future with the team.
According to The Race, Alpine has already informed Doohan of its intention to make the switch for Imola. French broadcaster Julien Fébreau echoed that information during the Canal+ F1 broadcast, stating that “everything indicates Colapinto will take the seat starting in Italy.”
Colapinto Backed by Briatore and Sponsors
Colapinto, who competed in nine Grands Prix last season with Williams, was signed by Alpine as a reserve driver in December. Since then, he has conducted private testing sessions and has been a key figure in the team’s long-term plans, thanks to strong internal backing from executive advisor Flavio Briatore.
Beyond performance, Colapinto also brings significant commercial value. He is supported by YPF and Mercado Libre, both partners of Alpine, and is seen as a promising talent capable of delivering results in the second half of the season.
The Argentine driver has a strong track record at Imola, where he previously won in Formula 2 and Formula 3, and his debut as a full-time F1 driver for Alpine could come at a circuit that holds a special place in his racing career. The official announcement is expected early next week.
