Argentina Aims to Host a Formula 1 Grand Prix Again
Interest in Formula 1 has reignited in Argentina, thanks to Franco Colapinto's strong performance in his first races in the World Championship driving for Williams. This has sparked hopes for the country to once again host a top-level race, something that hasn't happened since 1998.
Daniel Scioli, Argentina's Secretary of Tourism, Environment, and Sports, announced on his X account that "Argentina is ready for the return of Formula 1," stating that "the conditions are right, and there are also private investments to fund the event."
"Our country is gaining prominence globally thanks to the leadership" of President Javier Milei, and "Argentinians are once again paying attention to the highest category of motorsport due to the phenomenon" of Colapinto. During the International Tourism Fair of Latin America, which runs from Saturday to Tuesday, Scioli urged the Mayor of Buenos Aires, Jorge Macri, to finish the renovations at the ‘Oscar and Juan Gálvez’ racetrack to make it "Category 1." He added, "I know you’re a tireless worker, so you’ll get it done."
At the fair, Scioli also mentioned that he spoke with Milei about bringing Formula 1 back to Argentina, and that talks to make it happen are already "underway." Scioli added that he plans to attend the São Paulo Grand Prix in Brazil this November, where he’ll speak with "top authorities" from Liberty Media, the company responsible for setting the schedule for future seasons.
The "Colapintomania" is in full swing in Argentina, a country that hasn’t hosted a Formula 1 race since 1998, or a World Rally Championship event since 2019. In recent years, motorsport fandom in Argentina had become a niche passion, losing its mainstream appeal among young people and on social media, while still holding onto past idols like Juan Manuel Fangio and Carlos Reutemann.
The fair is organized by the Argentine Federation of Travel and Tourism Business Associations (FAEVYT) and the Association of Travel and Tourism Agencies of Buenos Aires (Aviabue).
