(VIDEO) Penei Sewell's Thanksgiving Trick Play Thrills Fans During Lions vs. Bears
Something that will never be missing is the creativity of Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, who surprised everyone this Thanksgiving with a trick play involving tackle Penei Sewell—a move that NFL fans absolutely loved.
The Penei Sewell Play Everyone Is Talking About
The play unfolded during the Lions' Week 13 matchup against the Chicago Bears. It happened on the Lions’ very first offensive series after they opted to receive the opening kickoff. Quarterback Jared Goff faked a handoff to David Montgomery and then tossed the ball to Penei Sewell, who was initially set up to throw a pass.
However, Sewell ultimately chose not to throw the ball—a smart decision since no receivers were open. Instead, the star offensive lineman decided to take off running, dragging several defenders with him, though he ended up losing yardage.
Despite the failed result, Lions fans cheered as if the play had been a success, adding a humorous touch to the moment.
Big-man plays are always a thrill, regardless of the outcome.
Sure, we would’ve loved to see Sewell throw the ball, but we were even more impressed by his patience and composure in not forcing the play. Rest assured, the Lions will likely try something similar again in the future.
