Volpato breaks goal drought in Sassuolo win
Australian-born Cristian Volpato scored for the first time in almost two years as he sparked a comeback win for Sassuolo against Fiorentina, a 3-1 win taking his side into the top 10 of Serie A.
Volpato struck from distance with a shot that went under Fiorentina goalkeeper David De Gea, who appeared to be unsighted as the ball came towards him and made a hash of his attempted save.
The goal came in the 14th minute, just five minutes after bottom side Fiorentina had gone ahead through Rolando Mandragora, who scored from the penalty spot.
Volpato's goal got Sassuolo ticking nicely and Tarik Muharemovic doubled the hosts' tally in stoppage-time time at the end of the first half.
Ismael Kone added a third for the home side, assisted by the impressive Volpato, who slipped the Canada international through on 65 minutes. He carried the ball into the box before beating De Gea with a shot that went in off the post and condemned Fiorentina to yet another defeat, its eigthth of the season so far.
The league's bottom side remains winless on six points, but for Sassuolo, a first win in three matches boosted its points tally to 20 and moved it up to eighth on the table.
