Roberto De Zerbi's team was much-improved from last week's 3-0 defeat to Brentford in the first half, but was kept at bay by the impressive Lukas Hornicek before Newcastle stormed to victory in the second period.

Elanga finished on the spin in the 62nd minute, and only 10 minutes later, Wissa found the net acrobatically after Spurs failed to defend a deep corner delivery.

While Spurs are yet to pick up a point or score a goal and sit bottom of the early-season table, Newcastle is up to third after its first competitive victory under new manager Matthias Jaissle.

Tottenham survived an early scare when Antonin Kinsky flapped at Elanga's cross-shot, but it was on top for much of the first half, with fellow Czechia goalkeeper Hornicek starring at the other end.

Hornicek parried efforts from Mathys Tel and Andy Robertson, as well as getting Jan Paul van Hecke's header clear at the second attempt, while Pedro Porro was frustrated by an outstanding recovery challenge from Lewis Hall as the first 45 minutes ended goalless.

Newcastle improved markedly after the interval, and after a few close calls, including a 20-yard curler from Hall that rose above the top-right corner, Elanga put it ahead.

He turned on the right side of the area after Amar Dedic headed Nico Gonzalez's raking pass into his path, with his left-footed shot coming off the inside of the far post before it trickled over the line. 

When Wissa hooked beyond Kinsky following a far-post knock-down from substitute Nick Woltemade, the majority of those present at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium were stunned into silence, with the hosts never looking likely to mount a fightback.

Spurs have spent heavily throughout the current transfer window, with this week's double capture of Savinho and Omar Marmoush from Manchester City taking their outlay beyond £350 million ($661.4 million), including an obligation to make Marmoush's loan permanent for a reported £60 million ($113.4 million).

De Zerbi still wants another addition before the window slams shut in midweek, but he has called for patience as Spurs rebuild after back-to-back 17th-place finishes.

"We are not panicking. I know where we are going. I know what the plan is and what the difficult problems could have been," he said.

"I'm sorry to the fans and players for the result, but we have to improve. To change the last two years... it's impossible to do that in 10 days or one transfer window.

"We have to work hard on the pitch. We have to find the connection between the players because last season, before the end, we were in the [EFL] Championship.

"We stayed up together; now we have to be calm."

A trip to The City Ground to face Nottingham Forest is up next for Spurs, which then host Everton and Aston Villa either side of a Carabao Cup third-round tie at Liverpool.
