Norwich sacks Manning after late loss to Leicester
Jordan James's 92nd-minute winner for Leicester City in a 2-1 win against Norwich City had massive implications, with the Canaries choosing to sack Liam Manning after the EFL Championship match.
The result was Norwich seventh straight home defeat, and ended a disatrous 17-game tenure for Manning, who joined in June having previously taken Bristol City to the play-offs last season.
After 11 matches without a victory in all competitions, the club felt it had no choice but to show Manning the door.
"We have tried absolutely everything possible to work through this incredibly challenging period but, unfortunately, given the recent run of results and performances, we have been left with no choice other than to make a change at this stage," Norwich sporting director Ben Knapper said.
"Liam and his staff worked tirelessly to move our football club forward. They are all fundamentally good people and we wish them the very best in whatever comes next."
First-team coach Ryan Garry has been put in interim charge, and he will be assisted by goalkeeping coach Tony Roberts and set-piece coach Nick Stanley, the club confirmed.
This latest result leaves Norwich second from bottom on the table with nine points, with only Sheffield Wednesday below after it was deducted 12 points and sits on minus-four.
Fans, though, were more unhappy with Knapper than the coach he fired, protesting outside Carrow Ground in the aftermath of this latest defeat.
"We very much understand the frustration and criticism from our supporters at this stage," Knapper added.
"So far, results and performances on the pitch haven't been good enough.
"We accept that responsibility, but it's now imperative that we start to repair the relationship with our supporters and do everything we can to give them something to get behind."
Mathias Kvistgaarden had put Norwich in front in the 62nd minute, a much needed moment to cheer for the suffering home support, but the good times didn't last.
Bobby De Cordova-Reid levelled two minutes after coming off the bench in the 75th minute and he was involved in the build-up to James's winner, a header that earned Leicester its first victory in six games.
Before the news of his sacking had reached him, Manning spoke on the protests from the fans.
"My whole thing is not to put on a sales pitch, my whole thing is to thank the fans today. I thought they were outstanding to the final whistle," he said.
"In a tough moment and where we are at, I thought they showed what they are about today and really stuck with the group, which is the most important thing.
"And going forward that's exactly what the lads will need.
"I don't live my life with regrets, it's part of my journey. I'm learning, I'm hurting, I'm frustrated and I'm hugely disappointed because this is a club I care deeply about. I didn't come here to be where we are. But we are, so I will do a lot of learning as to why."
