McGree proud of Boro teammates after tough win
Australia international Riley McGree praised his Middlesbrough teammates after starring in their 2-1 win over Sheffield United - a result that sent his side above Coventry into top spot on the Championship ladder.
McGree laid on the first goal for Tommy Conway, slipping an angled pass through to the feet of his team-mate, who coolly converted to give the visitor the league.
On the eve of half-time, the 27 year-old was in the right spot to nod home the rebound after Hayden Hackney's deflected shot thundered off the post.
Reflecting on an eye-catching performance, with the FIFA 2026 World Cup just four months away, McGree said it was nice to score a different type of goal to what he is used to.
“I was in positions I don’t normally find myself in as mush as I’d like to, following in shots and getting ‘easier’ goals, so it was good to get one today. With my head as well," he said.
Veteran England striker Patrick Bamford got the home side back into the contest midway through the second half, before a straight red to Joe Rothwell in the 80th minute effectively killed off the Blades' resistance, Middlesbrough extending its winning run to six games and overtaking Coventry at the top of the league.
“Six in a row, it’s not easy to do in any league, but this league especially. So I’m really proud of everyone involved," McGree said. "They started really well. It’s not an easy place to come.
"We knew it (the pressure) was coming. We knew what kind of game it was going to be for the first period. Like I said we dealt with it really well. We executed brilliantly."
Next up for Kim Hellberg's men, a mouth-watering clash with Coventry next Tuesday.
