Boro frustrated after wasteful show at Blackburn
Middlesbrough failed to put pressure on EFL Championship leader Coventry City after Kim Hellberg's side drew 0-0 with Blackburn Rovers.
Boro was on top for most of the proceedings at Ewood Park, with 71 per cent of possession, but failed to score with any of its 12 shots as Coventry went nine points clear at the summit with a 3-0 win over Swansea City later in the day.
Luke Ayling tested Balazs Toth early on during a scramble in the Blackburn box after a corner, while Aidan Morris fired wide of the target from close range as Boro started on the front.
Alan Browne raced through on goal for Boro shortly after the half-hour mark, but saw his shot blocked after cutting back on to his left foot, while David Strelec was kept out brilliantly by Toth on the stroke of half-time.
It was a more sluggish start to the second half from both sides, but it was still Boro that looked the more threatening as Morris managed to hit the target in the 58th minute, but could not find a way past Toth.
The visitors threw everything they had at a winner, with the final chance in the fifth minute of stoppage-time falling the way of Adilson Malanda, but his header was off target as Blackburn held on for a draw.
Boro boss Kim Hellberg was disappointed with the result, but not necessarily the performance of his side.
"We wanted it so much that we lost a bit of control and quality in terms of how we played, but it was a good performance in many ways," he said.
"We're doing our best, we kept a clean sheet away from home, we're trying to score, we created a lot of opportunities, but it didn't fall for us.
"Of course we need to score goals. If we don't, we won't win games."
