Boro drops points in draw with Wrexham
Middlesbrough could only cut the gap to free-scoring EFL Championship leader Coventry City by a single point as it rallied from 1-0 down to draw 1-1 with Wrexham.
Josh Windass's deflected strike put Wrexham ahead at Riverside Stadium after only seven minutes, and Boro had to wait until the 80th minute to level amid a lacklustre performance, with Hayden Hackney heading Callum Brittain's cross home.
Wrexham should have doubled its lead after a flurry of changes from Phil Parkinson, as substitute Lewis O'Brien crossed for Kieffer Moore, but the big frontman put his header against the crossbar from close range.
It was a miss that proved costly when Hackney scored, and he might have won it for Boro were it not for Arthur Okonkwo saving his free-kick late on as the hosts pushed for a winner.
While Boro extended its unbeaten record at home, the result saw it lose ground on three of the teams immediately behind them, as Millwall, Bristol City and Stoke City all earned single-goal victories.
For Wrexham, it let slip a chance to claim back-to-back wins for the first time this season.
"I'm disappointed it's not three points to be honest, Kieffer [Moore] had that great chance to score," Parkinson said after the game.
"I just felt that the goal we conceded was one we could have done better with.
"But we've played so well today, we've come to a stage that's a great test for us and we acquitted ourselves brilliantly."
