Wolfsburg boss optimistic over relegation battle
Wolfsburg manager Dieter Hecking was left with a "good feeling" after his side's defeat to Bayern Munich, as the Bundesliga relegation battle heads to the final day.
Michael Olise's 56th-minute goal secured a 1-0 win for the Bundesliga champion at Volkswagen Arena, despite an impressive performance from the relegation battler.
The result means Wolfsburg remains 16th in the league, level on points with 17th-place St. Pauli, which it faces on the final day of the season.
Should Wolfsburg avoid defeat, it will go into the relegation play-off, but a defeat would see Hecking's side relegated to the second tier.
The Wolfsburg boss took confidence from his team's display against Bayern, insisting the result did not mean much.
"I saw a team who believe in themselves, who can go at the intensity, who had a good shape and who had their moments in the game where it could've swung in our favour," he said.
"Of course, we know about the risk against Bayern – that you're eventually going to have a period in which you have to suffer. Unfortunately, we conceded the goal in that period.
"If we'd ridden that out better and maybe been quicker out to double up on Michael Olise, the game might have been more open towards the end. Then we had a huge chance with the shot against the post at the end.
"Ultimately, though, whether we'd drawn or lost heavily doesn't change the situation.
"Nevertheless, it's a good feeling. I'll take that because the players have really shown me in the last few weeks that they're capable of these performances."
