Kompany may need weeks to recover from collapse
Bayern Munich will not have Vincent Kompany on the sidelines for several weeks after his training ground collapse, but sporting director Max Eberl said the head coach will be with the squad in spirit.
Kompany suffered the collapse during a training session on Saturday (AEDT) and was taken to hospital for immediate tests. The club later confirmed he was stable.
Assistant Aaron Danks will take the coaching reins this weekend after Eberl decided against asking for Monday's game against SC Freidburg to be postponed.
Eberl said Kompany would be given as long as it takes to make a full recovery.
"The good news is he's stable, and we've spoken," Eberl said. "It wasn't a pleasant moment for any of us.
"He's in the hospital and will stay for a few days until everything has been checked out. This just goes to show that health is the most important thing in life – not football.
"We at Bayern Munich are all in this together. The most important thing is finding the cause. He shouldn't come back until he's fit – we have to protect him. He is in the best hands.
"Vinnie will be given all the time he needs; we're not setting any timeframes. We need to figure out what it is. Then we can calmly consider what the recovery time means.
"We need to firstly figure out what it is and then we'll discuss calmly what the recovery time is to be. We're not talking about days, but weeks. We all need to be clear on that," Eberl added.
"The coaching staff isn't considering changing anything. They all have Vinnie's spirit with them. That's how we’ll approach the next few weeks."
Danks also said he had spoken to Kompany solely to check on his well-being, not to ask for any advice on how to run the team on Monday (AEDT).
"I explained to him that we wouldn't be having any football conversations. It was just checking in on his health and making sure he's OK," Danks said.
"All the football operations are in our hands and we'll work together as a team to keep the club moving forward."
Bayern, which drew 2-2 with Arsenal in the UEFA Champions League in midweek, has 14 points on the board after six Bundesliga games, but was knocked off top spot on Sunday (AEDT) by Borussia Dortmund, which beat Eintracht Frankfurt 1-0 to leapfrog Bayern.
Host Freiburg is third, just one point worse off, after losing 2-1 to Bayer Leverkusen last weekend. It then went down 3-0 to Monaco in the UEFA Europa League on Friday (AEDT).
