MLS Playoff Preview: Portland Timbers Looking to Make History
The Portland Timbers and Vancouver Whitecaps are all even entering their second leg, while the New York Red Bulls, Montreal Impact and Seattle Sounders look to protect their first-leg advantages.
New York Red Bulls - D.C. United
The first game Sunday sees D.C. United travel north, attempting to overturn a 1-0 deficit against rivals and Supporters Shield winners New York Red Bulls. The match will be shown on ESPN at 3:00 p.m ET.
The Red Bulls have owned their rival at home this year, posting wins of 2-0 in March and 3-0 at the end of August. If things hold close to form Sunday, that will be more than enough with the goal advantage heading in. However, New York lost starting center back Damien Perrinelle for the season in the first leg, pushing Ronald Zubar into the spotlight, where the defender nearly cost his team after a borderline red card tackle last weekend. Meanwhile, D.C. welcomes back defender Bobby Boswell after a one-game suspension. Michael Farfan, Sean Franklin and Chris Pontius are all dealing with injuries, and are questionable to play, making life even harder for the visitor.
Columbus Crew - Montreal Impact
The Crew return home looking to blunt the surging Impact, but will need to reverse a 2-1 defeat across the border in the first leg to advance. The match will be shown on ESPN at 3:00 p.m. ET.
Arguably the hottest team in the league, the Impact have won five straight games - their last two playoff encounters and their final three regular season matches. While Didier Drogba has gotten much of the headlines, deserved at that, the resurgence of Patrice Bernier under Mauro Biello has allowed the Impact to form a solid defensive center in the midfield with Marco Donadel and Nigel Reo-Coker. That unit has been tough to break down, but that's exactly what the Crew will need to do to advance. With the Impact's strength down the middle, Ethan Finlay's pace out wide may be key, as will Kei Kamara, who has not found the net in three games. And the Crew defense will again need to hold Drogba off the board - easier said than done given the veteran will have had a full week, rather than just three days, to recover.
Columbus can hang its hat on a solid 9-4-4 record at home, compared to Montreal's 4-9-4 mark away. With that said, after Drogba's ascension to the starting lineup, the Impact have gone 2-2-2 on the road.
FC Dallas - Seattle Sounders
FC Dallas lost out on the Supporters' Shield on goal differential, and hosts the second leg of its Western Conference semifinal with the Seattle Sounders in danger of getting bounced from the playoffs after losing 2-1 in the Emerald City. The match will be shown on FS1 at 7:30 p.m. ET.
There's plenty for both sides to look at here. The Sounders need to get healthy, with Osvaldo Alonso and Brad Evans still questions, but the club's attacking force should be at full flow. For FC Dallas, the ability to get at a banged up Sounders' defense will be key in trying to slip past the team that has become a favorite to win the West. For the Sounders, having given up an away goal, getting on the board will be a big deal. For Dallas, keeping Seattle in check has to happen.
Vancouver Whitecaps - Portland Timbers
The lone draw of the first legs of the conference semifinals, the tie shifts to Vancouver for the second leg. The match will be shown on FS1 at 10:30 p.m. ET.
A conference semifinal featuring rival teams is always entertaining, but when the first match played out at 0-0 the second leg becomes something else entirely. Vancouver gets the joy of a home game, but home hasn't been the happiest place for the club this year. For Portland, the drama of the knockout round may have been a hindrance in the first leg, but on full rest the club's high-pressing, high-tempo approach should be in full swing.
