Novak Djokovic: “Wimbledon is my best chance to win the 25th Slam” Will it be his last dance?
Novak Djokovic has not lifted a Grand Slam title in almost two years, but the Serb is not losing his optimism. At 37, he arrives at Wimbledon with the conviction that the grass of the All England Club could be the ideal stage to break the drought and conquer his 25th major title, which would allow him to become the single largest winner in history, surpassing the 24 he shares with Australia Margaret Court.
The desire to continue, but with caution
During the Media Day of the British tournament, Djokovic did not avoid the big question: will this be his last Wimbledon?
"Could it be my last ball? I'm not sure, just as I wasn't at Roland Garros or any other Slam. My desire is to play a few more years. I would love to stay healthy, physically and mentally motivated to keep competing at the highest level. That's the goal, but at this stage of my career, you never know. And yes, I probably agree that Wimbledon could be my best chance to win my 25th because of the results I've had here, the way I feel and the extra motivation this tournament gives me," he explained.
Pursue history, not rankings
Djokovic also reflected on how his competitive focus has changed over the years:
"In a sense, you're always on the hunt: titles, records, making more history. I've always had that attitude of wanting to win, not just defend. Even though I've been world number one or defending champion many times, it's different now. I don't chase the ranking anymore. I focus on playing my best tennis in the Grand Slams. That hasn't changed."
Although he acknowledges ups and downs in his recent level, the Serb is confident about his performances at major tournaments:
"My level has fluctuated more than in the past, especially in the last year and a half. However, in the Grand Slams I have been quite consistent. Except for last year's US Open, where I fell in the third round, in the others I made it to at least the quarterfinals or semifinals. That's a good sign. These tournaments are still my biggest motivation."
Looking to overtake Federer... again
Currently ranked as the sixth best player in the ATP ranking, Djokovic will make his debut at Wimbledon against Frenchman Alexandre Muller (40th). In the second round, he will face the winner of the match between the British Daniel Evans (170th) and Jay Clarke (199th), while in the third round he could meet the American Alex Michelsen (33rd) or his compatriot Miomir Kecmanovic (49th).
If he advances according to the logic of the ranking, his path will intensify in the round of 16 against Australian Alex De Miñaur (11th), in the quarterfinals against Jack Draper or Alexander Bublik, in the semifinals against Jannik Sinner or Lorenzo Musetti, and in a hypothetical final against Carlos Alcaraz, Alexander Zverev or Taylor Fritz.
Wimbledon 2025 could represent a new historic page in Novak Djokovic illustrious career. The Serb is going for more. Will this be the final chapter?
