Senegal secured a crucial victory in its WAFCON 2026 campaign after defeating Kenya 1-0 in an intense Group A match.

Mbengue makes the difference

Senegal started the match with greater intensity following a move created by Bineta Seck, who found Mbengue in space near the edge of the box.

The forward unleashed a powerful shot that beat Kenyan goalkeeper Lilian Awuor, making it 1-0 in what would ultimately prove to be the winning goal.

Kenya tried to respond before halftime and came close to equalizing in the 41st minute, when captain Mwanalima Jereko attempted a long-range strike that sailed just over the crossbar.

Senegal misses the chance to score a second

Before halftime, Senegal had a golden opportunity to extend its lead.

Ndeye Awa Casset received the ball inside the box and fired toward goal, but Awuor produced an excellent save and tipped the shot onto the crossbar, keeping Kenya in the match.

Kenya comes within inches of an equalizer

Fasila Omondi was among the first to test the Senegalese goalkeeper, while substitute Marion Serenge wasted a clear chance in the 62nd minute by firing wide from a promising position.

The most dangerous opportunity came in the closing minutes. Tereza Obunyu beat her defender and sent a low shot against the post. The rebound fell to Jereko, but Ndiaye reacted brilliantly to deny the equalizer.

Senegal remains in control of its destiny

The result leaves the Lionesses of Teranga with qualification in their own hands ahead of their match against host nation Morocco on the final day of Group A. Another positive result could secure their place in the quarterfinals.

Kenya, meanwhile, suffered its second consecutive defeat and will now need a combination of results to maintain any chance of advancing to the next round.
