Malawi and Zambia meet in one of the most anticipated matches of the final round of Group C at the 2026 WAFCON when they face each other this Wednesday at Al Madina Stadium in Rabat.

Malawi aim to complete a historic group stage

Malawi have emerged as one of the biggest surprises of the 2026 WAFCON during their first appearance in the tournament.

The Scorchers began their campaign with a stunning 3-2 victory over Nigeria before defeating Egypt 3-1 to move to the top of Group C with six points.

A win or a draw against Zambia would guarantee Malawi a place in the quarterfinals as group winners. Even a defeat could still allow them to advance, depending on the result between Nigeria and Egypt.

Temwa Chawinga has been Malawi’s standout player, directly contributing to four goals in the tournament with three goals and one assist.

Chawinga scored in Malawi’s first two matches and became the first player from her country to record both a goal and an assist in the same WAFCON match.

Zambia face a must-win match

Zambia began their campaign with an emphatic 6-0 victory over Egypt, but they then lost 1-0 to Nigeria and were left needing all three points in the final round.

The Copper Queens must defeat Malawi to move above them in the standings and finish as Group C winners.

Nora Häuptle’s side will look to rely on the experience of players such as Barbra Banda and Racheal Kundananji, two of Zambia’s main attacking threats.

Although Banda did not register a shot on target against Nigeria, she had the most touches inside the opposition penalty area and finished level for the most duels won in the match.
