Malawi Looking to Extend a Historic Debut

Malawi have turned their first-ever WAFCON appearance into an unforgettable campaign.

The Scorchers opened the tournament with a historic 3-2 victory over defending champions Nigeria before defeating Egypt 3-1. Despite falling 2-1 to Zambia in their final group-stage match, they still finished top of Group C with six points.

A victory over Ghana would take Malawi even further: the Scorchers would become the first debutants since Zimbabwe in 2000 to reach the semifinals.

Much of their hopes will once again rest on Tabitha and Temwa Chawinga, the team’s two biggest attacking threats.

Ghana Banking on Their Experience

The Black Queens finished second in Group D after opening with a 2-0 win over Cape Verde, suffering a narrow defeat to Cameroon and drawing 1-1 with Mali in the match that ultimately secured their qualification.

The team coached by Kim Lars Björkegren is looking to reach its eighth WAFCON semifinal and return to the FIFA Women’s World Cup for the first time since 2007.

Their record against tournament debutants also strongly favors the Black Queens. Ghana have won eight of their previous nine matches against teams making their first WAFCON appearance, with their only defeat coming against Nigeria in the 1998 final.

A World Cup Ticket Is on the Line

The team that wins in Rabat will automatically qualify for the FIFA Women’s World Cup Brazil 2027.

For Malawi, it would mean reaching a World Cup for the first time in their history and completing one of the most impressive debut campaigns in WAFCON history.

For Ghana, it would mark a long-awaited return to the global stage after two decades away.
