Paris Saint-Germain have announced the signing of Lucas Digne from Aston Villa, with the France international returning to the club he left a decade ago. 

Digne has put pen to paper on a three-year contract with Luis Enrique's side after the two-time reigning European champions activated a release clause in the 33-year-old's contract.

PSG have reportedly paid €9.9m (£8.5m) for the full-back.

Digne spent three years at PSG between 2013 and 2016, making 44 appearances across all competitions before completing a move to Barcelona. 

He went on to sign for Everton in 2018, where Digne became a fan favourite and key player under Marco Silva and Carlo Ancelotti. However, he was sold to Villa in January 2022, having fallen out of favour under Rafael Benitez.

Digne appeared 182 times in all competitions during his time at Villa Park, scoring four goals and registering 23 assists. He also helped Unai Emery's side end their wait for a major trophy after they beat Freiburg 3-0 in the Europa League final in May. 

His arrival at PSG is set to provide competition for first-choice left-back Nuno Mendes, and Digne is relishing his second chance at PSG.

"I'm coming back as a man. I'm also a different player," Digne told PSG's website of his return to the club. 

"I've gained more maturity and experience, and I want to bring that experience to the squad and win lots of trophies. This club is built to win, it's in its DNA.

"This squad is extremely ambitious; it shows that year after year, and that's why everyone wants to come and play in Paris."

Digne is the third high-profile departure from Villa this summer, following the exits of Morgan Rogers to Chelsea and Youri Tielemans to Manchester United earlier in the window. 

He is also the second signing PSG have announced this week, after Maghnes Akliouche, who joined from Monaco for a reported €50m fee. 

And Digne could be in line to make his competitive debut against his former club. PSG face Villa in the Super Cup on Wednesday. 

PSG then face Lens in the Trophee des Champions before beginning their Ligue 1 title defence at home to Rennes on August 23.
