Cristiano Ronaldo remaining on the bench throughout Portugal's win over Norway quickly became a major talking point. CR7 did not play a single minute despite warming up, and he later trained away from the group ahead of the next match.

Reports of his frustration fueled speculation over a possible internal issue, but Rúben Dias moved to calm the situation before the clash with Denmark: “It is a moment of frustration that lasts 10, 15 or 20 seconds. It does not diminish in any way the commitment he has shown to our national team for more than 20 years.”

Then came the explanation from Jorge Jesus, who initially limited the number of questions about Ronaldo so the press conference could focus on the upcoming game. When he did address the issue, the Portugal coach was clear: Ronaldo's absence was part of a plan they had already discussed.

The Plan Already Agreed With Cristiano

Jesus said he knows the forward's physical condition extremely well after working with him for a year and that both had agreed on how to manage his workload during this demanding international window.

“It is true that I spoke to him, we created a plan like we did with Bruno Fernandes, and I told Cris that he would not play against Norway or Denmark,” Jesus explained.

The coach did admit that he considered using Ronaldo late against Norway, which is why the captain was sent to warm up. In the end, the flow of the game changed his decision.

“I had agreed with him that he would not play in the next two matches, but maybe I could even have needed him in the final minutes. The game told me something else, so I did not bring him on,” he added.

“Do Not Make a Drama Out of Something That Does Not Exist”

The Portugal boss also rejected reports suggesting that Ronaldo had refused to train after remaining unused.

Jesus explained that the captain completed individual gym and strengthening work as part of a physical plan similar to the one he followed when the pair worked together in Saudi Arabia.

“He did not refuse to train. It is impossible. Do you think any player with a national team refuses to train? Not with Portugal,” Jesus said.

He also made clear that Ronaldo's status does not change who makes the final decisions: “At a club, the president is in charge. In a team, I am in charge.”

Denmark Up Next for Portugal

The sporting focus now turns to Denmark, with Portugal looking to continue their perfect start under Jorge Jesus.

The coach left the door slightly open to changing the plan again depending on what the match demands, but insisted there is no dispute with Ronaldo.

“There was no incident. Do not try to create a scandal,” Jesus said, while acknowledging that any player would be frustrated after warming up for a long period and ultimately not entering the match.
