Aubameyang Saves Marseille in Europa League
The Gabonese Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang propelled Marseille to a 3-1 victory over Shakhtar in Jean-Louis Gasset's coaching debut, securing the French team's spot in the Europa League round of 16.
The Marseille side put an end to their crisis at the Vélodrome stadium, confirming their progress in the continental competition, which had begun with a draw in the first leg last week in Hamburg, where Shakhtar played as the home team, resulting in a 2-2 scoreline.
The match started in the worst possible way for the French team, as a foul committed by Jonathan Clauss inside the box led to a penalty converted by Georgiy Sudakov, putting the Ukrainian team ahead.
Aubameyang took charge and equalized in the 23rd minute; then, in the second half, he assisted Senegalese Ismaila Sarr to score the second goal that put the hosts ahead.
Marseille secured their passage to the next round nine minutes from the end with a goal from Central African Geoffrey Kondogbia, which also ended Shakhtar's European adventure. The team, coming from the Champions League, is now eliminated from the Europa League as well.
