UEFA Shuts It Down: Barça Claim Rejected
UEFA backs Atlético de Madrid and dismisses FC Barcelona complaint.
The refereeing controversy between FC Barcelona and Atlético de Madrid has now been officially resolved. UEFA has declared Barcelona’s complaint inadmissible following the first leg of their UEFA Champions League quarterfinal clash, effectively closing the case.
The dispute stemmed from a handball incident involving Marc Pubill, which Barcelona believed should have resulted in a penalty—and possibly a red card. However, referee István Kovács did not award a foul, and VAR chose not to intervene.
Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick voiced strong frustration after the match, questioning the role and effectiveness of VAR in such situations. His comments echoed the broader dissatisfaction within the club.
The Catalan side quickly filed a formal complaint, arguing that similar refereeing decisions had negatively impacted them in recent Champions League campaigns. Nevertheless, UEFA’s disciplinary body ruled that the claim did not meet the criteria for review.
With this decision, UEFA effectively supports the original officiating and Atlético Madrid’s position, leaving Barcelona with no further recourse. The ruling not only ends the dispute but also reignites debate over VAR limitations and the ability of clubs to challenge refereeing decisions at the highest level.
