Nico Paz Reveals Why He Chose to Stay at Como Instead of Returning to Real Madrid

  • Nico Paz explained why he decided to stay at Como instead of returning to Real Madrid. After shining in the Champions League, the Argentine defended a decision that could shape his future.

Nico Paz Chose Como Despite Real Madrid Interest

Nico Paz had the door open to return to Real Madrid, but the Argentine midfielder decided to take a different path. Instead of returning to the club where he developed, he chose to continue his growth at Como, a decision that now appears even more meaningful after his impressive Champions League debut.

During the latest transfer window, Los Blancos showed interest in bringing the player back and having him under their command once again. However, Nico Paz considered staying in Italy the best option for his development, especially given the competition he would face for a place in the attacking midfield of the Spanish powerhouse.

A Decision Focused on Playing a Bigger Role

After Como’s 4-1 victory over RB Leipzig, the Argentine explained that his decision was mainly driven by his desire to continue gaining experience and important playing time.

I thought this was where I would grow the most. I think I made the right decision and I’m glad I did,” the midfielder said in comments reported by Sky Italia.

His development has also been backed by his numbers. After scoring 12 goals and providing seven assists during the 2025-26 season, he was named the best midfielder in Serie A, a distinction that raised expectations for his future even further.

Champions League, Two Assists and a Strong Statement

The night against Leipzig ultimately served as a powerful argument in favor of the decision he made over the summer. Nico Paz directly contributed to two goals and was one of the most influential players of the match.

It was a historic night. We played an incredible game,” he said after the match, making it clear that this was exactly the kind of stage he wanted to find at Como.

His performance even drew comparisons with Lionel Messi, thanks to a notable statistical achievement. Paz became the youngest Argentine to record two assists in a Champions League match since Messi in 2008.

Real Madrid Can Still Come Back for Nico Paz

Choosing to remain in Italy does not mean the connection between Nico Paz and Real Madrid is over. Quite the opposite. The Spanish club still has a path to bring the midfielder back in the future, although it would have to make a considerably larger investment.

The new agreement includes an €80 million buyback clause, around $92.75 million, a figure that represents a significant increase compared with the previous arrangement.
