FC Porto Possible Lineup Against Manchester City in the Champions League

  • The Dragons enter their European opener in outstanding form, but immediately face one of the leading contenders for the Champions League title.

Porto Look to Carry Their Perfect Start Into Europe

FC Porto begin their 2026-27 UEFA Champions League campaign on Tuesday, September 8 against Manchester City at the Estádio do Dragão, with their impressive early-season form facing its biggest test yet.

The Dragons have made a perfect start to their Primeira Liga campaign, winning five consecutive matches. Francesco Farioli’s impact is already evident, particularly at the defensive end, with Porto conceding just one goal during their excellent start to the season.

Waiting for them is a Manchester City side that have also been flawless in league play. Enzo Maresca’s team have won their opening three Premier League matches and, given the quality and depth of their squad, once again enter the Champions League as one of the leading contenders for the trophy.

Farioli Has Absences to Deal With Against City

Farioli will have some selection issues to navigate ahead of the European opener. Porto enter the match with several players listed among their injury concerns, including Jan Bednarek, Zaidu Sanusi, Gabriel Mec, Oskar Pietuszewski, Samu Aghehowa and Vasco Sousa.

Those absences could force the Italian coach into adjustments, particularly in defense and attack, although he is still expected to retain much of the core that has delivered Porto's perfect start.

Diogo Costa remains the clear choice in goal, while Jakub Kiwior should have an important role at the heart of a defense facing the daunting task of containing Erling Haaland.

André Silva Set to Lead the Attack

With Samu Aghehowa unavailable, André Silva is in line to lead Porto's attack. The 30-year-old Portuguese striker has enjoyed a strong start to the campaign, scoring two goals while starting every league match for the Dragons.

Pepê and William Gomes could operate either side of Silva in a front three that will need to be clinical whenever opportunities arise. Porto are unlikely to generate the same volume of chances they have enjoyed domestically, meaning making the most of their opportunities could be crucial against City.

In midfield, Pablo Rosario should provide balance alongside Gabri Veiga and Hwang In-beom, with Porto facing a major battle for control against Maresca's talented midfield.

Farioli could line his team up in a 4-3-3 formation, keeping much of the core that has powered Porto's excellent start to the season.
