Diego Simeone loses 'Cuti' Romero as Atlético de Madrid scramble to face Bayern in the Champions League

  • Atlético de Madrid head into their Champions League clash with Bayern Munich without Cristian 'Cuti' Romero

Confirmed absences in Atlético's squad

Diego Simeone's 24-man squad for Tuesday's Champions League match between Atlético de Madrid and Bayern Munich confirmed the absence of Cristian 'Cuti' Romero, who was left out of the list alongside Morten Hjulmand, suspended, and Johnny Cardoso, with a muscle injury.

Romero's situation and other absences

Recently recovered from a muscle strain that kept him out for two matches, the Argentine centre-back returned to the squad last Saturday against Levante, but did not play a single minute, did not train on Sunday or Monday and, ultimately, is not ready to play against Bayern at the Metropolitano.

Romero joins the already known absentees Hjulmand, following his sending-off in the previous matchday against Stuttgart, and Cardoso, who has missed his team's last three games with a low-grade muscle issue, including Tuesday's clash.

Returns and full squad list

Diego Simeone, however, welcomes back Koke Resurrección after five matches out with a muscle injury, and has named Romeo Hueso, a full-back from the reserve team, as a new addition, along with Jorge Castillo and Jorge Domínguez.

The squad is made up of goalkeepers Jan Oblak, Juan Musso and Salvador Esquivel; defenders David Hancko, Marc Pubill, Alejandro Grimaldo, Robin Le Normand, Romeo Hueso, Jorge Domínguez and Dani Martínez; midfielders Marcos Llorente, Obed Vargas, Koke Resurrección, Rodrigo Mendoza, Pablo Barrios, Alex Baena and Jorge Castillo; wingers Arnau Ortiz, Giuliano Simeone and Ademola Lookman; and forwards Alexander Sorloth, Jonathan David, Julián Alvarez and Kang in Lee.
