Galatasaray crush Juventus and move closer to the Champions League Round of 16

Galatasaray made a strong statement in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday with a 5–2 victory over Juventus in the first leg of the play-in round, putting the Turkish side within reach of the Round of 16 for the first time in more than a decade.

The star of the night in Istanbul was Dutch forward Noa Lang, who scored twice in a match that tilted decisively after the sending-off of Colombian defender Juan Cabal in the 67th minute.

The Turkish club has not reached the Champions League Round of 16 since the 2013–14 season, when they were eliminated by Chelsea, and will now travel to Turin holding a three-goal advantage.

Noa Lang leads the rout in the “Turkish hell”

Lang stepped up when it mattered most. The attacker, who had not scored since arriving in January, netted two crucial goals to bring down Juventus, who had briefly turned the game around before collapsing in the second half.

The match began at a fast pace. Gabriel Sara put Galatasaray ahead in the 15th minute after a defensive mistake, but Teun Koopmeiners responded with a brace to give the Italian side the lead before halftime.

The home side reacted quickly after the break, with Lang equalizing by capitalizing on a rebound.

Cabal’s red card changes everything

The turning point came when Juan Cabal received a second yellow card while trying to stop Barış Yılmaz, one of Galatasaray’s most dangerous attackers. Shortly afterward, Davinson Sánchez scored with a header to restore the lead.

With a numerical advantage, Galatasaray punished Juventus’ defensive mistakes. Another error in buildup play allowed Noa Lang to score his second goal with a delicate finish over the goalkeeper.

The scoring was sealed in the 86th minute by Sacha Boey, whose powerful strike sparked celebrations in Istanbul and left the tie nearly decided.

Galatasaray will now travel to Italy with a comfortable advantage and hopes of returning to the Champions League Round of 16 after 12 years.
