Everything You Need to Know About the Century-Old Galatasaray vs Fenerbahçe Rivalry
More than 117 years of history, two continents, and a rivalry that goes far beyond soccer. Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe compete in one of the world's most passionate derbies, defined by historic victories, legendary players, and unforgettable moments.
Turkish soccer has one of its greatest expressions of passion in the rivalry between Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe. Known as the Intercontinental Derby, the fixture brings together two of the country's most important clubs in a confrontation that dates back to the early 20th century.
Since their first meeting in 1909, both teams have built a remarkable history filled with memorable encounters and some of Turkish soccer's greatest players.
The story began on January 17, 1909, when Galatasaray defeated Fenerbahçe 2-0 in a friendly played at Papazın Çayırı, the ground where Fenerbahçe's stadium now stands.
Galatasaray, founded in 1905 by students at the historic Galatasaray High School, has its roots on the European side of Istanbul. Meanwhile, Fenerbahçe was founded in 1907 in Kadıköy, located on the city's Asian side.
This geographical separation, marked by the Bosphorus Strait, gave rise to the name Intercontinental Derby.
Although historical social differences influenced the clubs' early identities, their modern fan bases represent a wide range of backgrounds across Turkish society.
The rivalry's early years were dominated by Galatasaray. In fact, Fenerbahçe had to wait almost five years to celebrate its first victory over its archrival.
It was not until January 4, 1914, in the eighth meeting between the two clubs, that the Yellow Canaries finally secured a 4-2 victory.
That match also entered the history books because Hasan Kamil Sporel scored Fenerbahçe's first-ever goal in the derby, ending a scoring drought that had lasted throughout the first seven encounters.
The Biggest Victories in Derby History

The history of the Intercontinental Derby has been shaped by two extraordinary victories that remain unforgettable for supporters.
The first came on February 12, 1911, when Galatasaray defeated Fenerbahçe 7-0 in the former Istanbul League.
However, the circumstances surrounding that encounter were even more remarkable. According to historical accounts documented by the Turkish press, a powerful storm disrupted ferry services across the Bosphorus, preventing several Galatasaray players from reaching the match on time.
The Lions reportedly started with just six players and eventually finished with seven after another teammate arrived. Fenerbahçe, meanwhile, began with ten players and ended with nine following an injury to its goalkeeper.
Despite those extraordinary circumstances, Galatasaray recorded what remains recognized as the biggest victory in the derby's history.
More than nine decades later, Fenerbahçe produced a historic performance of its own.
On November 6, 2002, the Yellow Canaries demolished Galatasaray 6-0 in a match that appeared to take a different turn when Ariel Ortega, who had scored the second goal, was sent off in the 58th minute.
Instead of struggling with ten men, Fenerbahçe went on to score four more goals, including two from Serhat Akın, sealing one of the most memorable victories in the club's history.
The Legendary Players Who Defined the Intercontinental Derby

The rivalry has also produced remarkable individual achievements.
Zeki Rıza Sporel, the legendary Fenerbahçe striker, is recognized as the fixture's all-time leading scorer with 27 goals, according to Anadolu Agency's historical records.
Former Galatasaray goalkeeper Turgay Şeren holds the record for most derby appearances, having played 55 matches against Fenerbahçe.
Other iconic names include Lefter Küçükandonyadis, who scored 20 derby goals for Fenerbahçe, and Metin Oktay, who netted 19 for Galatasaray.
In the overall head-to-head record across competitions, Fenerbahçe holds the advantage in total victories.
The Moments That Turned the Derby Into a Legend
One of the rivalry's most iconic moments occurred in 1996, when Scottish manager Graeme Souness planted a Galatasaray flag in the middle of Fenerbahçe's pitch after winning the Turkish Cup.
The gesture became one of the most recognizable images in the history of Turkish soccer.
More recently, the derby produced another extraordinary episode.
On April 7, 2024, Fenerbahçe decided to field its Under-19 team against Galatasaray in the Turkish Super Cup, protesting what the club considered unfair treatment by the Turkish Football Federation, amid disagreements over scheduling and other institutional decisions.
Just over a minute into the match, Mauro Icardi gave Galatasaray the lead, prompting Fenerbahçe's young players to walk off the pitch.
The encounter was abandoned after approximately 101 seconds, and Galatasaray was subsequently awarded a 3-0 victory and the trophy.
The incident became one of the most astonishing moments in recent Turkish soccer history, highlighting how the rivalry can extend beyond the pitch and into institutional disputes.
When Is the Next Galatasaray vs Fenerbahçe Derby?
The next Intercontinental Derby is scheduled for Monday, October 26, 2026, at 9:30 PM Turkish time, at RAMS Park in Istanbul, for Matchday 9 of the 2026-27 Turkish Süper Lig.
The Turkish Football Federation considered changing the fixture's date but ultimately decided to maintain the original schedule.
It will mark another chapter in a rivalry that, after more than 117 years, remains one of the most captivating spectacles in world soccer.
