Can FC Porto Win the Portuguese League?
After winning the 2025/26 title with a six-point advantage over Sporting CP, FC Porto begins its defense with continuity under Francesco Farioli and another squad capable of fighting for first place.
FC Porto enters the 2026/27 Liga Portugal season with something its main rivals do not have: the title to defend. After finishing six points clear of Sporting CP last season, Francesco Farioli’s team has enough continuity and quality to believe that another championship is a realistic objective.
A champion built on consistency
The foundation was established during an impressive 2025/26 campaign. FC Porto finished first with 88 points from 34 matches, ahead of Sporting CP on 82 and Benfica on 80. The Dragons were remarkably consistent throughout the season and eventually secured their 31st Portuguese league title.
One of the biggest reasons for optimism is Farioli himself. The Italian coach arrived in 2025 and quickly transformed the team into a highly competitive unit. By January, Porto had completed the best first half of a league season in Portuguese football history while conceding only four goals in 17 matches. The club rewarded that work by extending Farioli’s contract until June 2028.
Continuity also extends to the squad. Diogo Costa remains a major presence in goal, while Jakub Kiwior, Jan Bednarek, Alan Varela, Victor Froholdt, Gabri Veiga, Rodrigo Mora, Borja Sainz and Pepê provide quality across different areas of the pitch.
André Silva makes an immediate impact
The arrival of André Silva gives Farioli another important option in attack, and the Portuguese striker has already responded. After scoring during preseason against Birmingham City, Silva also found the net in FC Porto’s Liga Portugal opener.
The forward converted a penalty in the ninth minute to open the scoring in the 2-0 victory over FC Alverca at the Estádio do Dragão. Gabri Veiga later added the second, also from the penalty spot. Silva’s performance earned him the Liga Portugal MVP award on his return to league action with Porto.
The victory gave the defending champions exactly the start they needed: three points, a clean sheet and an immediate contribution from their new striker.
Can Porto defend its crown?
The title defense also started with three points. FC Porto defeated FC Alverca 2-0 at the Estádio do Dragão on the opening weekend, giving Farioli what he described as an important result to begin the campaign with the right spirit.
Repeating last season will not be straightforward. Sporting CP remains a serious contender, while Benfica is beginning a new project under Marco Silva after finishing eight points behind Porto last season. European competition will also test the depth of Farioli’s squad.
But FC Porto does not need to prove it can win this league: it already did. The question is whether it can reproduce the consistency that separated it from its rivals. With the coach retained, much of the core intact and a winning start already secured, the defending champion has every reason to believe it can do it again.
