Callum Wright scored in the third minute of second-half stoppage time as Hibernian claimed a shock 2-1 victory over Rangers, in Derek McInnes' first league game in charge at Ibrox. 

After Josh Campbell scored an early penalty and Rangers saw reported Galatasaray target Youssef Chermiti carried off on a stretcher, it appeared the Glasgow giants' blushes had been spared by Miguel Chaiwa's 85th-minute own goal.

But, with Rangers throwing men forward in search of a winner, they were hit with a sucker punch from Hibs substitute Wright, whose shot took a slight deflection off Tuur Rommens and trickled into the far corner.

The result leaves Rangers five points off the title pace just two games into the campaign, with Celtic and St. Mirren both on maximum points. 

Only 10 minutes were on the clock when a VAR intervention caused fury among the home fans, with Vanja Dragojevic punished following a seemingly innocuous tangle with Jason Kerr from a corner. 

Campbell sent Ivor Pandur the wrong way from the resulting spot-kick, and Rangers' first chances to equalise were spurned by Chermiti, who dragged one left-footed effort wide and was denied by a heroic goal-line clearance from Kanayo Megwa.

Raphael Sallinger was called into action by a thunderous volley from Rommens, and Rangers suffered another blow when Chermiti collided with the advertising hoardings after chasing the rebound, with the striker subsequently being carried off.  

Nico Raskin was thwarted by Sallinger and Lawrence Shankland's effort deflected onto the crossbar as Rangers stepped up their dominance, but their luck was in when the unfortunate Chaiwa diverted Djeidi Gassama's low cross from the left beyond his own goalkeeper.

Sallinger then made a great save with his feet to keep out Gassama, and Hibs made that let-off count when they raced clear on the counter-attack from a Rangers corner, with Wright's shot finding its way into the bottom-left corner. 

Earlier on Sunday, McInnes' former club Hearts got their first victory of the campaign, thrashing Dundee United 4-0 at Tynecastle with Tom Renaud, Calvin Miller, Claudio Braga and Josh McPake scoring.

Another concerning start for Rangers as Hibs maintain hoodoo

Hibs have now won each three of their last four away league games against Rangers (L1), triumphing on successive visits to Ibrox for only the fourth time.

The previous occasions on which they mustered back-to-back wins on the ground came in September 1902, October 1985, and February 2018.

McInnes, meanwhile, might already be feeling some pressure, with Rangers only having one point on the board in the league and facing a 2-1 first-leg deficit against Jagiellonia Bialystok in their Europa League third-round qualifier.

Things already look eerily similar to their 2025-26 campaign, when they failed to win any of their first five Premiership games under Russell Martin and were out of the Champions League before the end of August. 

Martin only lasted until early October, and if McInnes is to build some early-season goodwill, a victory at home to Jagiellonia on Thursday might already be a must.
