Mudryk joins on a season-long loan with a £75 million purchase option, while Tosin leaves Stamford Bridge permanently in a deal worth around £7 million.
Tottenham Shake Up the Transfer Market With Two Chelsea Signings
Tottenham Hotspur took advantage of the final hours of the transfer window to strengthen two positions at once and, in the process, do so at the expense of one of their biggest London rivals. Spurs completed the signings of Mykhailo Mudryk and Tosin Adarabioyo, both arriving from Chelsea.
The two moves have the stamp of Roberto De Zerbi all over them, especially the signing of the Ukrainian winger, who previously worked with the Italian coach during their time together at Shakhtar Donetsk.
Mudryk Looks to Restart His Career With De Zerbi
The arrival of Mykhailo Mudryk will probably be the deal that attracts the most attention.
Tottenham had been searching for another difference-maker in attack and eventually found an opportunity at Chelsea after other options in the market failed to materialize.
There is also one factor that could prove crucial: De Zerbi knows the Ukrainian extremely well.
The pair worked together at Shakhtar during the 2021-22 season and now reunite in London. Mudryk himself expressed his excitement about working with the Italian again and emphasized that he hopes to bring speed, creativity and the ability to create danger in one-on-one situations.
For De Zerbi, the challenge will be to rediscover the best version of a player who was once considered one of the most exciting young talents in Europe.
Mudryk joined Chelsea in January 2023 in a deal initially worth around £62 million, but he never managed to establish himself as an undisputed star at Stamford Bridge.
His career later suffered an even bigger setback. The Ukrainian spent around 20 months without competing following a case related to an adverse result in an anti-doping test. He was eventually cleared to return in July and will now have the opportunity at Tottenham to virtually start from scratch.
Tosin Arrives to Strengthen the Defense
Tottenham did not stop there.
Shortly after completing the Mudryk deal, Spurs finalized the permanent signing of Tosin Adarabioyo for approximately £7 million.
The center-back arrives to increase De Zerbi’s defensive options following the departure of Kevin Danso, who joined Sunderland on loan.
Tosin brings Premier League experience, physical strength and, most importantly, a quality that could be particularly valuable in the style of soccer the Italian coach wants to implement: comfort when building play from the back.
The player himself highlighted De Zerbi’s style as one of the reasons that convinced him to make the move. The coach wants a team that is brave in possession and willing to take risks when playing out from the back, characteristics that could suit the defender perfectly.
Tottenham Close In on £400 Million in Spending
The two signings confirm the massive transformation Tottenham have undergone this summer.
Mudryk and Tosin become Spurs’ ninth and tenth additions of the transfer window, respectively. The club’s total spending is now approaching £400 million, following other major moves including the arrivals of Sandro Tonali, Mateus Fernandes and Savio.
Mudryk is also involved in a rare transfer between these two London rivals. He becomes the first player to move directly from Chelsea to Tottenham since Carlo Cudicini made the same switch in 2009.
De Zerbi Has a Completely Revamped Squad
Mudryk’s arrival also came after Tottenham encountered obstacles in other negotiations during the closing stages of the transfer window.
Spurs had attempted to sign Cody Gakpo, but the Liverpool forward ultimately prioritized other possibilities. Iliman Ndiaye also emerged among their attacking options before his future took a different direction.
Tottenham ultimately reacted by turning to a player De Zerbi knows extremely well and who still has plenty to prove in England.
For Mudryk, the opportunity could be enormous. At 25, he needs to regain consistency, confidence and competitive rhythm after an extremely difficult period in his career.
For Tottenham, the gamble is also significant. If the Ukrainian can rediscover something close to the explosive player who impressed in Ukraine, Spurs will have the opportunity to turn his loan into a permanent transfer.
After investing close to £400 million and transforming almost their entire squad, Roberto De Zerbi now has new weapons for his project.
And on the final day of the transfer window, Tottenham Hotspur found two of them just across London.
