The Serious Problem Facing Chelsea
The FA charged Chelsea with 74 counts of irregular agent payments between 2009 and 2022, putting the club at risk of sanctions.
A Historic Investigation
Chelsea is facing a new scandal shaking English football. The FA has accused the club of breaching rules on agents, intermediaries and third-party investment between 2009 and 2022, with most of the irregularities concentrated between 2010 and 2016.
According to the official statement, the club failed to properly declare a series of payments to agents, which appeared in the records submitted to the federation. In total, 74 charges have been filed against the London side, who have until September 19, 2025 to respond.
The Shadow of Abramovich
According to The Telegraph, the Premier League is also conducting its own independent investigation, which remains ongoing. What stands out is that the accusations trace back to the era of Roman Abramovich, when so-called “secret payments” were used to secure signings of stars like Eden Hazard, Willian and Samuel Eto’o.
Although the case relates to events from the past, the big question remains: should the current owners bear the consequences?
Possible Sanctions and a Dilemma
According to The Times, an independent regulatory commission will decide the sanctions, which could range from financial fines and transfer bans to even points deductions. The dilemma is significant, as Clearlake Capital and Todd Boehly, the current owners, were the ones who informed the authorities about the irregularities when they took over in 2022.
In the midst of a sporting rebuild, Chelsea now faces a legal battle that could define the club’s immediate future.
