Michael Carrick Under Pressure as Julian Nagelsmann Emerges on Manchester United Radar
The heavy defeat to Como deepened the Red Devils’ crisis, and possible replacements are already beginning to emerge at Old Trafford.
The 4-1 defeat to Como may have pushed Michael Carrick into his most difficult moment since taking permanent charge of Manchester United. The Red Devils have now gone seven consecutive games without a win in all competitions, and the pressure surrounding the manager continues to grow.
The defeat in Italy was particularly damaging. Como took control almost immediately and eventually punished a United side unable to respond, with Nico Paz producing two goals and an assist. The current run is United’s worst since they went eight matches without a victory between November and December 2015.
Carrick did not try to hide from the result either. He admitted he was “really angry,” described the performance as unacceptable and apologized to the supporters. The frustration also reached the dressing room, with Bruno Fernandes publicly questioning elements of United’s approach and calling for the team to be braver with its pressing.
Julian Nagelsmann Returns to the Picture
Against that backdrop, Julian Nagelsmann is beginning to emerge as a possible alternative. According to talkSPORT, Manchester United have once again explored the German coach’s name after he already had admirers inside the club before Carrick was handed the job on a permanent basis.
Nagelsmann is currently available after leaving the German national team following its disappointing World Cup campaign. Before taking charge of Germany, he built his reputation with Hoffenheim and RB Leipzig before moving on to Bayern Munich.
His current situation makes him a more accessible option than he was only a few months ago. Nagelsmann had already been linked with the Old Trafford job before United committed to Carrick, and his name reportedly continues to have support within the club’s hierarchy.

From a Deal Until 2028 to an Unexpected Crisis
What makes the situation even more striking is how quickly things have changed. United confirmed in May that Carrick would remain in charge until 2028 after an impressive second half of the previous season restored optimism at Old Trafford.
Carrick had initially returned in January and went on to record 11 wins in 16 matches, while also guiding United back into the Champions League. That run convinced the club to give him continuity and make him the long-term choice for the project.
Only a few months later, the picture looks completely different. The results have disappeared, United are enduring their worst winless run since 2015, and the collapse against Como has once again placed the manager’s future at the center of the conversation.
Nagelsmann Is Not the Only Candidate
The German is not believed to be the only option Manchester United are considering if they eventually decide to make a change. Fabian Hürzeler, currently in charge of Brighton, is another coach with admirers at Old Trafford, although his contract runs until 2029, which could make any move significantly more complicated.
Antonio Conte and Eddie Howe have also been mentioned, while other reports have included names such as Mauricio Pochettino, Kieran McKenna and Simone Inzaghi.
For now, Carrick remains in charge, with Bournemouth next up at Old Trafford. But after seven games without a win and potential replacements beginning to surface, his margin for error is becoming increasingly small.
Why the Pressure Is Growing on Carrick
- Manchester United have gone seven consecutive games without a win, their worst run since 2015.
- Julian Nagelsmann had already been considered by the club before Carrick signed until 2028 and is now available.
- Carrick remains in charge for now, but the Bournemouth match arrives with his future under intense scrutiny.
