Manchester City has strengthened the core of its defense by announcing a new long-term contract for Joško Gvardiol. The Croatian international has signed a five-year extension that will keep him at the Etihad Stadium until the summer of 2031, with an option to extend the deal for an additional season.

The 24-year-old has become one of City's most important defenders since arriving from RB Leipzig in 2023 in a £77 million transfer. His impact was immediate, earning him the club's Player of the Year award for the 2024-25 campaign.

After putting pen to paper, Gvardiol expressed his delight at remaining in Manchester and made it clear that renewing his contract was an easy decision.

"As soon as I knew City wanted to extend my contract, I knew it was exactly what I wanted. The fans have been incredible since day one, and this club provides absolutely everything a player could need. It is the best club in the world," he said.

The Croatian also praised the quality and youth of City's squad, expressing confidence that the team is well positioned to continue winning major trophies in the coming years.

Director of Football Hugo Viana welcomed the agreement, describing Gvardiol as one of the world's top defenders. He highlighted the defender's versatility, pace, strength, and professionalism, adding that his ambition perfectly matches the club's long-term vision.

The extension follows the recent renewal of fellow defender Abdukodir Khusanov, underlining Manchester City's commitment to building a young, talented defensive unit following the departures of experienced players such as John Stones and Nathan Aké.
