Enzo Maresca and Chelsea part ways at the start of the New Year 2026
The start of 2026 brings a major surprise, as Chelsea announced the departure of Enzo Maresca following a run of poor results.
Chelsea and Enzo Maresca delivered the first shock of the new year. In the early hours of 2026, the Blues confirmed they had mutually parted ways with the head coach, despite Maresca having a contract that ran until June 2029. The decision comes even after he led the club to FIFA Club World Cup glory.
What did Chelsea say about Maresca’s departure?
Despite rumors of tension between the coach and the board, Chelsea offered limited detail regarding the decision.
“During his time at the club, Enzo guided the team to success in the UEFA Conference League and the FIFA Club World Cup. These achievements will form an important part of the Club’s recent history, and we thank him for his contribution,” the club said in a statement.
“With key objectives still to play for across four competitions, including qualification for the Champions League, Enzo and the Club believe that a change gives the team the best opportunity to get the season back on track. We wish Enzo the very best for the future,” the Blues added.

What may have led to Maresca’s exit?
According to Opta, Enzo Maresca becomes the first Premier League manager to leave his post on New Year’s Day.
While Chelsea had enjoyed a strong start to the season and even challenged near the top of the table, results deteriorated over the past month. Additionally, after a draw against Bournemouth, Maresca raised eyebrows by not attending the post-match press conference.
English media report that the Italian coach also had disagreements with the club’s medical staff, feeling there was interference in his work.
Maresca leaves Chelsea having managed 92 matches across all competitions, recording 55 wins, 16 draws, and 21 defeats.
