Cucurella Returns Sooner Than Expected for Chelsea
The injury sparked concern for Chelsea and Spain. But the recovery came sooner than expected.
A timely boost for Chelsea
On February 14, alarms went off at Chelsea and within the Spain national team when Marc Cucurella suffered a hamstring injury during the match against Leeds United. Early reports from England suggested the Spanish full-back would be sidelined for three to four weeks.
However, Cucurella’s recovery has progressed much faster than expected. The defender was already included in Liam Rosenior’s squad for Chelsea’s crucial visit to Aston Villa at Villa Park, managed by Unai Emery.
Ready to return to action
Although Cucurella will start the match on the bench, his presence among the substitutes means he could see minutes in the second half if his coach decides to bring him on.
This is a major boost for Chelsea, who are entering a demanding stretch of the season with several key fixtures ahead. In the Premier League, the Blues are fighting to finish inside the top five — positions that grant access to the Champions League for the 2027 season. At the same time, the club is preparing for a high-profile UEFA Champions League Round of 16 tie against PSG.
Relief for Spain as well
Cucurella’s return is also welcome news for Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente, who relies on the left-back as a regular starter.
The defender now appears on track to be fully fit for the Finalissima scheduled for March 27, where Spain will face Argentina.
Uncertainty over the venue
Despite the approaching date, the location of the match remains uncertain. The original venue was the Lusail Stadium, but escalating tensions involving the United States, Israel, and Iran have cast doubt on Qatar’s ability to host the event.
Although no official decision has been announced, several cities have emerged as possible alternatives, including Madrid, London, Rome, and even Rabat. What seems increasingly clear is that the match will not be played in Doha, following Qatar’s decision to suspend all sporting events in the country.
With Cucurella back available, both Chelsea and Spain receive a timely boost as the season enters its decisive phase.
