Brentford boosted their Champions League hopes and dented West Ham's chances of avoiding relegation from the Premier League with an eye-catching 3-0 win at the Gtech Community Stadium.

An end-to-end first half somehow featured just one goal, with Konstantinos Mavropanos putting through his own net under pressure from Michael Kayode in the 15th minute.

Mavropanos had a powerful header at the other end disallowed for offside, while Valentin Castellanos struck both posts before the interval – with a curler from the edge of the box and a bullet header from a corner.

Igor Thiago and Mikkel Damsgaard also passed up excellent chances before the first period was through, but they were both on target in the second as Brentford streaked clear.

Thiago sent Mads Hermansen the wrong way from the penalty spot in the 54th minute, after El Hadji Malick Diouf clumsily chopped down Dango Ouattara just inside the area.

And Damsgaard completed the scoring with a neat turn and finish with eight minutes to play, after West Ham hit the woodwork for a third time, via Crysencio Summerville's curler against the crossbar.

While Brentford climb three places to sixth, which could bring Champions League qualification if Aston Villa finish fifth and win the Europa League, the result is a major blow to West Ham's survival hopes.

They remain two points clear of Tottenham in 17th, though they will drop into the bottom three if Roberto De Zerbi's team beat Villa on Sunday.

Brentford entered this game having failed to win any of their last six Premier League matches (D5 L1), while they had also gone six without victory at home (D4 L2).

But Keith Andrews' side stormed to three vital points in the hunt for European qualification. Their 14 shots had a total expected goals (xG) value of 2.04, compared to West Ham's 0.72 xG from 13 attempts.

Perhaps those figures did not tell the full story of the game, though, as West Ham became only the fourth team to hit the woodwork at least three times in a Premier League game this season (also Liverpool versus Manchester United in October, Brentford versus Sunderland in January and Chelsea against Manchester United last month).

Thiago will be particularly pleased to get on the scoresheet, with his 22nd goal of the season moving him within two of Premier League Golden Boot frontrunner Erling Haaland.

Prior to Saturday, he had only scored one goal in a Premier League London derby this season, from 21 shots in those matches.
