“The Swedish Rat”: The Burger Mocking Alexander Isak That’s Taking Over Newcastle
A burger with an insulting name has become Newcastle’s most popular dish… all thanks to Alexander Isak’s “betrayal.”
A Transfer That Won’t Be Forgiven
This summer delivered one of the Premier League’s most controversial moves: Alexander Isak’s transfer from Newcastle to Liverpool. The Swedish striker, once adored at St. James’ Park, went from hero to villain in just a few weeks. And while he tried to justify his decision, the Magpies’ supporters neither forget nor forgive.
The bitterness in the city runs so deep that even its local cuisine has joined the protest.
The Birth of “The Swedish Rat”
At Scott & Wilson Bistro, owner Calvin Khass came up with a burger to portray Isak’s “betrayal.” The dish is called “The Swedish Rat” and has quickly become a bestseller. Its recipe is as peculiar as the nickname: mashed meatballs, mashed potatoes, Ikea-style gravy, and lingonberry jam, all served between two slices of bread.
“It’s as contrived as his transfer,” Khass told the Northern Echo, making it clear the inspiration was as ironic as it was pointed.
A Mockery With an Ikea Flavor
The burger is already the second-best seller on the menu and has gained massive popularity across the city. “Swedes aren’t really known for their cuisine, so I thought we could offer something they are known for — specifically Ikea,” the owner added.

With culinary creativity as their weapon, Newcastle fans have found a new way to vent their anger at the man who not long ago was their star goalscorer.
