Xabi Alonso Compared to Pep Guardiola... Not Klopp
Jamie Carragher, former Liverpool player, stated that Xabi Alonso's Bayer Leverkusen resembles more a team managed by Pep Guardiola than one by Jürgen Klopp, while analyzing the Spaniard as a potential new coach for Liverpool.
Xabi Alonso, leading Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga, secured a 3-0 victory over Bayern Munich this weekend and aims to become the first German champion different from Bayern since 2013.
Examining Saturday's win, Carragher emphasized the high number of short passes made by Bayer Leverkusen, accounting for nearly 95% of the total, positioning them as Europe's top team in this category, ahead of Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain, second and third in the rankings.
"It's not like Klopp's Liverpool. It's more reminiscent of what we see from Pep Guardiola's team," Carragher affirmed.
"We can say that Alonso's influence is more like Guardiola's, which makes sense because he was his coach."
The former Liverpool player, now one of British television's leading commentators, mentioned that Alonso is the favorite to succeed Klopp, and "there's a good chance" it will happen.
"When you think of great coaches and where they started, many of them achieved significant things at lower levels. Like what José Mourinho did with Porto and Jürgen Klopp with Borussia Dortmund winning two Bundesliga titles."
"If Xabi Alonso becomes Liverpool's new coach, which I think will happen, they're lucky Klopp decided to leave now. The timing for Alonso to come in is perfect," Carragher pointed out.
