Everton has been penalized with a loss of two points, adding to the six points already deducted, due to financial irregularities in their accounts up to 2023.

The Liverpool-based club was previously penalized in late 2023 for breaching Premier League financial rules in the 2021-2022 season, resulting in a ten-point deduction which was later reduced to six after an appeal.

The club faced new accusations from the Premier League for exceeding the £105 million limit for losses over three years allowed by the competition. This new sanction sees Everton dropping from 29 points to 27 and falling from fifteenth to sixteenth place, just two points above the relegation zone currently occupied by Luton Town, who have played one more match than the 'Toffees'.

An independent commission of the Premier League reviewed the case and imposed the sanction on Everton, who have the option to appeal the decision.

According to Everton, the Premier League has unfairly punished them twice, as two of the three years involved in this second case were also part of the initial sanction. They also argue that the current sustainability rules of the competition are outdated and do not reflect current inflation.

In their latest financial statements for the 2022-2023 season, Everton reported losses of £90 million.

Everton is not the only Premier League club to face sanctions this season. Nottingham Forest also lost four points due to financial irregularities. Additionally, the Premier League accused Manchester City of 115 irregularities, along with investigations into Leicester City and Chelsea.
