Arsenal Beats Real Madrid and Xabi Alonso to Star Signing
Spanish midfielder Martín Zubimendi has officially joined Arsenal, turning down interest from Real Madrid and Xabi Alonso.
Key Signing for Arteta’s Project
Arsenal has completed the signing of Martín Zubimendi, one of Real Sociedad’s standout players, for a fee close to €60 million. According to British media, the deal is done and only the medical examination remains before the midfielder is unveiled as a new 'Gunner'.
Mikel Arteta’s side had been quietly working for months on the transfer, convinced that the Spanish international fits perfectly into their tactical system. At 26, Zubimendi brings balance, vision, and international experience—exactly what the North London club needs to cement its place among Europe’s elite.
A Setback for Madrid and the Bundesliga
This move is also a blow to Real Madrid, who had identified Zubimendi as a potential reinforcement for their midfield. Xabi Alonso, head coach of Bayer Leverkusen, was also keen to take him to the Bundesliga. But the player opted for the Premier League as his next challenge.
Zubimendi ends a successful spell at Real Sociedad, where he debuted in 2019 and made 236 appearances. His leadership on the pitch and key role in Spain’s Euro 2024 triumph made him one of the most sought-after midfielders on the market.
This decision mirrors the case of Mikel Merino, who also chose Arsenal over top European clubs. The London side continues to build a strong squad with Spanish talent, aiming to compete for major titles both domestically and in Europe.
With this signing, Zubimendi joins an ambitious project and leaves both Real Madrid and Xabi Alonso without a major target in midfield.
