3 Reasons Not to Miss the Polish Clasico: Legia Warsaw vs Lech Poznań

Two giants of Polish soccer meet on Sunday in a clash of cultures, history and bragging rights, with both clubs battling near the top of the Ekstraklasa standings.

1. A Clash of Cultures: Warsaw vs Poznań

The relationship between Legia Warsaw and Lech Poznań has always been complicated.

These two Polish soccer giants represent major cities with distinct lifestyles and deeply rooted cultural stereotypes.

While residents of Poznań, the heart of the Greater Poland region, are often portrayed as frugal, organized and reserved, people from Warsaw, the nation's capital, are stereotyped as busy, career-driven, loud and cocky.

That contrast creates the perfect backdrop for a classic underdog vs. establishment rivalry.

For years, Legia operated in a way that reflected Warsaw's position of power.

Originally established for the Polish Legions, the club later became the official team of the Polish Army, using its privileged status to recruit talent from across the country.

When promising players reached military service age, the Polish Army could assign them to Legia. Those who refused risked being sent to a regular military unit, where they would have no opportunity to play soccer.

In the 1980s, Legia forced two Lech legends, Mirosław Okoński (three league titles and two cups) and Jarosław Araszkiewicz (a record five league titles and two cups), to spend two years in Warsaw.

Ironically, Okoński scored twice against Lech in a cup final.

Poznań supporters remain convinced that, had both players stayed, the trophy cabinet at Bułgarska Street would contain even more silverware.

2. Fierce Rivals On The Pitch And In The Stands

Historically, both clubs have been dominant forces in Polish soccer.

Legia boasts 43 trophies, including 15 league titles, while Lech has won 22 trophies, including 10 league championships.

Together, these fierce rivals have claimed seven of the last 10 league titles, with Lech winning four, including the last two.

That dominance has fueled a long-standing rivalry both on the pitch and in the stands.

Supporters of both clubs regularly direct hostile chants at their rivals.

“You cannot be friends with a team you compete against for trophies,” says Bartosz Bereszyński, the only homegrown Lech player to voluntarily leave the club for Legia.

His controversial move, comparable to Luis Figo's transfer from Barcelona to Real Madrid, earned him the nickname “Judas” among Lech's Kolejorz supporters.

Several high-stakes meetings between the clubs have been marred by fan violence, pitch invasions and pyrotechnic incidents.

In May 2018, a match was abandoned after Lech supporters threw flares and invaded the pitch with Legia just minutes away from securing another championship.

Recent results have favored Lech, including a 5-2 victory in 2024 and a 4-0 triumph in April 2026.

3. Two In-Form Teams Fighting For The Ekstraklasa Title

Since that 4-0 defeat, Legia has gone 14 consecutive league matches unbeaten.

Marek Papszun's side sits third in the standings, just three points behind Górnik Zabrze and two behind Lech Poznań.

With experienced players such as Bartosz Kapustka, Paweł Wszołek, Kamil Piątkowski and Rafał Augustyniak, alongside talented 21-year-old American Robert Deziel Jr., Legia will be looking for revenge on Sunday.

The problem for the hosts is that Lech is in outstanding form.

During its current three-match winning streak, Lech has outscored its opponents 15-3.

In that stretch, Pablo Rodríguez and Patrik Wålemark have scored five goals each, while Mikael Ishak has contributed two goals and three assists.

With so many attacking weapons, Lech has every chance of spoiling the occasion at Łazienkowska 3 and handing Legia its first league defeat of the season.
