San Jose Earthquakes v Seattle Sounders: 'I'm not done yet' – Arena aiming to maintain perfect MLS start
The San Jose Earthquakes have won all three matches so far, and they will be keen to stretch that run to four against the Seattle Sounders.
Bruce Arena insists he is just getting started with the San Jose Earthquakes as he aims to continue their perfect start to MLS against the Seattle Sounders.
The 'Quakes were one of four teams to win their first three games, along with San Diego FC, the Vancouver Whitecaps and Los Angeles FC.
They grinded out a 1-0 victory away to the reigning Supporters' Shield champions, Philadelphia Union, last time out, earning their third clean sheet in as many games.
And when asked what kind of legacy he would be leaving after a start like that, Arena said: "Aren't legacies like when you're done? I'm not done yet.
"The performance against [Philadelphia] certainly was not perfect, but good teams win those kinds of games because they know how to grind it out in a match when we're not moving the ball particularly well."
The Sounders, meanwhile, are just three points off San Jose in the table after sandwiching a loss to Real Salt Lake between victories against Colorado Rapids and St. Louis City SC.
They also impressed in the Concacaf Champions Cup round-of-16 first leg against the Whitecaps in midweek, running out 3-0 winners thanks to a brace from Paul Arriola on his first start since recovering from an anterior cruciate ligament injury.
"Coach said he just wants me to make plays," Arriola said of his goals. "Offensively, defensively, that's all I try to do.
"It's not always going to be pretty, not always going to be the beautiful goal that you remember.
"It's the ones like these that mean the most; that kind of sum up my career, pushing hard, being in the right spot at the right time."
PLAYERS TO WATCH
San Jose Earthquakes – Timo Werner
Timo Werner has provided an assist off the bench in each of his first two career MLS appearances.
The German is the second player in MLS history to come off the bench in his first two MLS games and record an assist in both, joining Brian Ownby, who did so for the Houston Dynamo in 2012.
Seattle Sounders – Jesus Ferreira
Jesus Ferreira recorded his 40th career regular-season assist in Seattle's win at St. Louis on Saturday to go along with 57 goals.
Since his MLS debut in 2017, Ferreira is one of six players with at least 50 goals and 40 assists, but the only American on that list.
MATCH PREDICTION: SEATTLE SOUNDERS WIN
Seattle ended an eight-match winless run against San Jose in all competitions in the last meeting between the sides, with a 3-2 home win.
The Sounders have not won consecutive matches against the Earthquakes since wins in November 2020 and May 2021.
San Jose are one of just three teams – along with Los Angeles FC and San Diego FC – to have started their season with three straight shutout wins.
But for the seventh time in team history, Seattle have opened the season with two wins in their first three games. The Sounders have won three of their first four games of a season three times, doing so in 2009, 2019 and 2021.
