Müller Jokes About James and Minnesota’s Freezing Weather
Thomas Müller joked about James Rodríguez’s struggles with cold weather, recalling their Bayern Munich days as the Colombian prepares for his new challenge with Minnesota United in MLS.
The reunion of Thomas Müller and James Rodríguez in Major League Soccer has sparked both nostalgia and playful banter. Ahead of the clash between Vancouver Whitecaps and Minnesota United, the German forward recalled one of his former teammate’s well-known “weaknesses”: dealing with cold weather.
The two stars shared the dressing room at Bayern Munich between 2017 and 2019, combining James’ creativity with Müller’s tactical intelligence at the Allianz Arena. But according to Müller, the harsh Bavarian winters were never James’ favorite part of life in Germany.
In a video shared by Vancouver Whitecaps’ official channels, Müller reacted with surprise when talking about the Colombian’s new destination.
“I was a bit surprised he chose Minnesota,” Müller said with a smile. “I remember in Munich he always said he was freezing. And now he goes to Minnesota, which is probably the coldest place in the United States.”
The joke has some truth behind it. Minnesota is known for its extremely cold winters, with temperatures that can drop close to –30 °C.
Despite the climate challenge, James appears focused on a bigger goal: regaining form ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Sunday’s match will also mark a historic moment in MLS, as it will be the first time two World Cup Golden Boot winners face each other in the league: Müller, top scorer at the 2010 FIFA World Cup, and James, who won the award at the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
While Müller has already scored twice in his first games in Canada, James is still looking to establish himself in Minnesota after recovering from a recent injury.
