Alberth Elis Emerges From the Induced Coma
Honduran international footballer Alberth Elis has emerged from the induced coma in which he had been placed by doctors as a protective measure, his family announced on Wednesday.
"We are happy to share with you the first encouraging signs: Alberth is waking up and appears to be gradually recovering," stated a press release from the family, disseminated by the player's club, Girondins de Bordeaux of the French second division.
Nevertheless, the family has chosen to "exercise caution regarding the evolution of his condition, as the next few days will be crucial."
"Alberth is a fighter," adds the statement, which concludes that the family will continue to provide updates on the status of the Honduran forward.
Elis suffered a severe blow to the head in a collision with Guingamp defender Donatien Gomis during the league match played last Saturday in Bordeaux.
The 28-year-old player was treated on the field for eight minutes before being taken to the stadium's medical room and then to Pellegrin University Hospital, where he underwent surgery that same night and was placed in an induced coma.
