Messi could return home as Newell’s targets signing him
Newell’s Old Boys aims to bring Lionel Messi back in 2027
The Argentine club Newell’s Old Boys, where Lionel Messi took his first steps as a footballer, plans to bring the Inter Miami star back in 2027, according to the club’s vice president, who confirmed it to local media on Tuesday.
A project beyond the club
“We are working on having Leo play for Newell’s in the first half of 2027, but for now, that’s all,” said Juan Manuel Medina, the club’s first vice president, in an interview with Todo Noticias.
Medina explained that it is “a project that goes beyond Newell’s”, involving authorities from the city of Rosario, the province of Santa Fe, and Argentine football. Everything will depend on the infrastructure and a competitive sports plan the club can offer. Talks with Messi began in 2024.
Messi and his current contract
Messi, who will turn 39 in July, has a current contract with Inter Miami through the end of the 2028 MLS season. He joined the American club in mid-2023, after leaving Paris Saint-Germain.
The dream of his return
The return of the Argentine icon is a long-held dream for Newell’s fans and all of Argentine football, which never got to see Messi play in local leagues because he moved to Barcelona at 13.
In 2025, another Argentine star, Ángel Di María, returned to local football with Rosario Central, Newell’s main rival, scoring 9 goals and 3 assists and celebrating the League Champion title awarded to his club for accumulating the most points in the annual General Table.
